Congress passed the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act in 1975, which is now commonly referred to as the federal lemon law. Under this law, if a warrantor of any sort of consumer product doesn’t comply with its warranty obligations after being afforded a reasonable opportunity to do so, the consumer may be eligible to receive compensation for monetary damages, attorneys’ fees, and costs.
Generally speaking, the federal lemon law applies to the sale and lease of all consumer goods including new and used cars, RVs, boats, computers, appliances, and other consumer products that come with some sort of written warranty.

This federal law aims to protect buyers for purchases of $25 or more that come with a written warranty. When a manufacturer or a seller of any sort of consumer product makes a sale, it is their responsibility to provide the consumer with detailed information about warranty coverage. Consumers should always have the opportunity to compare warranty coverage before they make a purchase.
What Happens When a Warranty Is Breached?
In the case that you purchase a new vehicle only to bring it into the shop repeatedly for the same repairs, there’s a chance you may have a lemon, and the warranty may have been breached. In this case, federal breach of warranty laws will kick in to provide protection.
Unlike state lemon laws, federal lemon laws do not have any mileage restrictions on which motor vehicles quality. The federal lemon law requires that the consumer only provided the warrantor a reasonable opportunity to repair under the manufacturer’s warranty.
