Hyundai Motor America and Kia America, Inc. are recalling over 570,000 vehicles due to a fire risk and instructing owners to park the cars outside until repairs are complete. The affected vehicles are the 2019-2023 Hyundai Santa Fe, 2021-2023 Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid, 2022-2023 Hyundai Santa Fe PHEV, 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz and 2022-2023 Kia Carnival. The recall is similar to one Kia issued last year relating to the tow hitch harness. The circuit board in the tow hitch harness equipped on the affected vehicles has been found to be susceptible to water intrusion. This could then cause a short, which increases the risk of fire. Hyundai stated the chance of fire is present while parked or while driving.
The fix is to install a new wire extension kit that is improved and built with waterproof material to prevent water ingress. The dealer will also install a new fuse. While the repair is not yet available, Hyundai stated owners can bring their vehicles to an authorized dealer to have the fuse to the tow hitch module removed, which addresses the immediate fire risk. Hyundai claims all of the affected vehicle vehicles are safe to drive, but recommends parking outside and away from structures until the recall repair is performed.
