Ford Motor Company is recalling over 600,000 Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan and Lincoln MKZ sedans due to their brakes not working properly. Impacted model years include 2006 through 2010 vehicles and the issue is due to a faulty valve within the braking system. In the case that the valve fails, drivers need to push down on the brakes harder and farther than they typically would, ultimately putting them at risk of an accident.
Ford is aware of 15 crashes and two injuries that are potentially related to the problem.
The Fix
Ford, Mercury and Lincoln dealers will replace the faulty valves in addition to pressure flushing the brake system using a fluid called DOT 4. This specific type of brake fluid helps to enhance the vehicle’s performance in higher temperatures in addition to improving anticorrosive properties. In addition, dealers will replace the brake fluid reservoir cap that indicates these vehicles need DOT 4 brake fluid instead of DOT 3 fluid. All of the above repairs will be free of charge.
Owners can feel free to contact Ford customer service directly at 800-392-3673, and the NHTSA’s reference number for this recall is 19S54.
